We believe that qualified teachers are uniquely positioned to provide outstanding tuition. However, we also recognise that not all qualified teachers excel in their craft. That’s why all of our tutors are not only certified educators but have also successfully passed our rigorous assessment process, proving they are truly exceptional teachers!

They are all experienced qualified teachers.
Many of our school entrance tutors have significant experience and track records in preparing students for competitive school entrance exams
Many of our tutors are also examiners
They have achieved academic excellence themselves
Many of our tutors have achieved other relevant skills such as qualifications to assist students with special educational needs
How can I save money when using an Owl Tutor
Consider online tuition if you have not already done so. Most students at KS2 or above will have no problem engaging just as efficiently with an online tutor than a face to face one. Face to face tuition can be up to 50% more expensive for the same tutor!
Consider shorter sessions. Most tuition sessions are one hour. 40 minute sessions can often be effective and could reduce your fees by 33%.
Find out if there are times that you can offer to your tutor that are more convenient for them. Most tutors find it difficult to fill their hours during the day (9am to 3pm) in the week. Many of them will accept lower rates at these times.
How do our fees work?
Our tutors set the rates that they wish to be paid on each job. The rate that they will request will be dependent on a number of factors including:
The rate they wish to earn per hour
Whether the job is face to face or online
How much preparation time is required for each session
The tutor's remaining availability
Our daughter had an excellent experience with Alan, with whom she worked on upper level maths in the IB system. His instruction provided such a strong base that she is excelling in the subsequent school year too. Alan is an engaging instructor with deep knowledge of various school systems (IB, GCSE), and tailored the learning appropriately for our daughter.

Alan's biography
Alan is a highly experienced and empathetic tutor having worked online with dozens of students each year since moving from full-time teaching to private tutoring in 2013. He has worked with all abilities, including students with ADHD and anxiety issues, students who have been off school due to illness and have needed to catch up and those in need of reparation for entrance examinations.
He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Warwick and worked in experimental physics research for a number of years at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory's neutron source near Oxford. After teaching Mathematics and Physics in Zimbabwe for Voluntary Service Overseas, he qualified as a science teacher in 2000. He has taught Mathematics and Physics up to A-level and IB HL level (Analysis and Approaches) in international schools in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. He is an examiner for the IB board and has sponsored a young man through high school and university in Swaziland who graduated with a BA in Accounting and Commerce.
He has taught students with notable success, including helping many students achieve the necessary grades to enter their desired school or university. He adapts his teaching to the level of the student, seeks out useful resources and motivates students. He has also helped a student gain the necessary qualifications to enter Cambridge University as well as two special needs students pass Functional Skills mathematics. He has tutored to the 16+ exams for a number of independent schools. He has made it possible for failing GCSE students to pass mathematics and for many A-level and IB students to gain higher grades than they were predicted. He has taught a wide range of students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. In 2019, he supported a student in the lower sixth at Holland Park School who was at risk of being dropped from the A-level physics and maths courses. After five months of intensive tuition, he reached the standard to continue with both subjects. In 2020, he helped 9 and 13 year old siblings pass their maths entrance exams for Emanuel School and St Pauls in London. He is interested in development issues in Southern Africa, is a keen long-distance runner, and has completed nearly 40 marathons and ultra races.
IB Experience
I have taught IB mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) for seven years in schools and for ten years as a private tutor. I have taught IB Physics at HL for two years in schools and tutored it for ten. Please note I do not teach the Applications and Interpretations course.

School entrance experience
Alan has worked with children aiming to attend the following schools:
In 2020, I helped students pass the 13+ mathematics exam for St Pauls and Cheltenham Ladies' College (6th form entrance) and the 11+ maths exam for Emanuel School. In 2024 I helped a boy pass the 13+ maths exam for Shrewsbury School.
I tutor 13+ and 16+ entrance tests that comprise of a mathematics / physics component. I don't tutor the non-subject specific or verbal reasoning type papers.
Alan's qualifications
Alan qualified to teach Maths in 2000, and holds a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) from University of Sussex.
I am very thankful for the insightful tutoring Alan provided to my daughter Gabi. The supporting material he provided, the preparation and explanation style were ideal for her improvement and understanding of the complex math topics.
